Not all visitors to healthcare facilities walk upright-from time to time you may find yourself having to accommodate four-legged guests and the noise, excitement, and potential infection risks that come with them. Although pets and service animals can play an important role in healthcare, they can also be a threat to patient safety if proper precautions are not taken, says Kathy Aureden, an epidemiology coordinator at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL, and a member of a Practice Guidance team at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC), which is participating in animal visit guideline development.
